Summary
Modernizing Algebra 2 is not about reducing the rigor or providing "an easier" Algebra 2 offering, it is more
about ensuring that we include the standards that are often left out of a traditional Algebra 2 course, but
are standards that are often more applicable to a majority of students, including those that choose not to
take Pre-Calc or Calculus in high school. It is about making advanced algebraic concepts relevant to a
majority of students no matter what pathway they choose
Series Goals
Together as a CESA 12 team of secondary math educators...
1) Learn why both mathematics educators, secondary & post-secondary, are modernizing Algebra 2.
2) Using the WI State Math Standards, Identify the foundational components of Algebra II essential for
preparing all students for career or college admissions.
3) Explore the different approaches states are taking across the country and decide what makes most
sense for CESA 12 students.
4) Using district-adopted high-quality instructional materials and guidance from the Charles A Dana Center
University of Texas at Austin (leader of the National Launch Years Initiative Project) we will collectively
create a scope and sequence for Modern Algebra. 2.
5) Content Outcomes: Modeling with Quantities, Modeling with Data, Modeling with Functions,
